Introducing fractions with food, pictures and number lines

Suitable for ages 6โ€“11

Fractions often feel abstract because they are written as two numbers stacked together. Children understand them far better when they can see equal parts first โ€” slices of a pizza, pieces of a bar, steps on a line.

What children practise

  • Equal parts
  • Naming halves, thirds and quarters
  • Comparing and simplifying
  • Linking fractions, decimals and percentages

Equal parts first

A fraction only works when the parts are the same size. Fraction Fun asks children to choose how to cut before any wedges appear, so the idea of equal division comes before the symbol.

From pictures to numbers

Later adventures move from pizza and cake models to number lines, simplest form and then decimals and percentages. Hints show a worked example separately, so a child's own answer is never changed for them.

Talk about fairness

โ€œIf we share this between four people, is it fair?โ€ is one of the best fraction questions you can ask at the dinner table.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Cut a sandwich into halves, then quarters, and name each piece.
  • Fold paper strips to compare 1/2 and 2/4.
  • Keep sessions short; one adventure at a time is plenty.
