Learning times tables with short, regular games

Suitable for ages 7โ€“12

Quick recall of times tables frees a child's attention for harder maths later. Recall grows best with a few minutes of practice on most days rather than one long drill.

What children practise

  • Multiplication facts 1โ€“20
  • Spotting number patterns
  • Speed with accuracy
  • Confidence under gentle time pressure

Patterns before speed

The 5s end in 5 or 0, the 9s digits add to nine, and 4s are double the 2s. Pointing out patterns gives children a way to work out a fact they have forgotten.

Little and often

Times Table Arcade keeps rounds short and shows the table being practised, so a child can choose one table, master it, then mix it with others.

Paper for the fridge

Printable tables and practice grids give a screen-free option and something to pin up as a reminder.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Practise one table for a week before moving on.
  • Ask facts in reverse: โ€œwhat times 6 makes 42?โ€
  • Praise improvement, not just speed.
